The Boundary oil pump is a must-have upgrade for MX-5s looking to run either a higher rev limiter or higher power. A good rule of thumb is anything over 300 horsepower or running over 7,000 RPM be installing billet oil pump gears. Shock loading caused by boost cut or RPM limit can shatter the OEM sintered oil pump gears, resulting in complete engine failure.
Consider it insurance if you’ve just built a forged engine with new pistons, rods, and bearings. You wouldn’t want all that to be ruined by an oil pump failure. The sintered gears inside of a stock oil pump assembly are only rated to about 6KSI of stress before shattering. These gears provide a serious structural upgrade to 90Ksi steel.
All Boundary billet oil pumps start with a brand new pump which undergoes the following processes
- The pump is completely taken apart, and all parts undergo ultrasonic cleaning, air blast, and hand inspection
- The pump is hand de-burred
- An industry-leading mirror-finished stage 1 gear set is used
- Stainless Torx heads replace the stock fasteners
- All fasteners are torqued to spec
- Loctite is applied to fasteners to prevent back-out or loosening
- Anaerobic sealant is applied to critical areas to boost pump-up speed and reduce aeration.
- Assembly lubricant is applied to all critical surfaces to get oil flowing fast on startup
- Parts are blueprinted and issued with a specification sheet
Stage 2:
Stage 2 increases oil flow by machining a deeper pocket and installing larger gears into the oil pump. As a result, the oil pump gears are stronger and mid-range oil pressure is increased. The increased oil flow means this pump can be used with VVT engines.
Stage 3:
Stage 3 increases oil flow by an additional 10% over the stage 2 high-flow pump machining a deeper pocket and installing even larger gears into the oil pump. An anti-cavitation billet back-plate is fitted to increase volume and reduce foaming, increasing engine bearing life and high RPM oil flow.? A sleeve is installed into the relief valve to ensure smooth operation and the pickup tube port is enlarged and ported for extra performance.
The billet oil pump gears in the Stage 3 pump are subjected to a dual-stage MartenWear heat treatment which renders the surface of the gears extremely hard and long-wearing. The surface is resistant to wear caused by debris ingestion that can happen in extreme operating conditions and is lab tested to be wear-free beyond 13,000RPM. These oil pumps have been tested on the track to 10,000RPM and 900BHP, so you can be safe in the knowledge that these pumps will keep your engine safe no matter how much power you put through it.
A front main seal is not included.
Stage 2 Pumps come pre-shimmed by the factory to 72psi. If you require a different relief pressure, remove the existing shim washer and replace with the relevant unit from the shim pack.
Please note the 1.6 NA was revised in 1991 and received a different bolt, woodruff key, pulley, crankshaft and harmonic damper. Please check your VIN to confirm fitment.
